nbc 10 breaking news. assault investigation. philadelphia police say a teen and her mother were both attacked inside her home in frankford and the suspect could be a relative. also breaking this morning, police in delaware county are searching for three men who broke into a prospect park home and led police along a chase along i-95. memories destroyed. flames burned through a philadelphia american leith post on a day dedicated to honor men and women who serve their country. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's get started with meteorologist bill henley with his first alert neighborhood forecast, a close look at conditions at communities across pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. good morning, bill.

>> good morning, tracy. most of the area is completely clear of fog. but we are watching for some spots and finding it at the shore, north wildwood, new jersey, no rain here but the fog is coming in as cooler air comes across all the moisture that was left over from yesterday. the showers are out of the picture. fog is thick in hazleton. light fog for the rest of the area. toms river, down to a mile and a half visibility. under two miles for millville, a mile an a half now in wildwood. we don't have to worry about the fog first thing this morning as the temperatures climb and they will be climbing today. we'll see the fog disappear. . in philadelphia, 60s for the lehigh valley. breaks in the clouds for lehigh valley, 66 degrees. that's 73 degrees in northeast philadelphia bustleton. society hill at 72 and andorra is 70 degrees right now. satellite and radar shows the clouds, showers already

offshore. we will get some sunshine and a big warmup. we'll go through the forecast hour by hour when i'm back in ten minutes. katy zachry is watching your first alert traffic. it's back to work tuesday. interestingly, we had more going on at this time with it being memorial day, people leaving the shore and the poconos early. girard avenue, light traffic. looking clear. if you're headed southbound between woodhaven and the vine street expressway, that will take you 13 minutes. the schuylkill expressway maying your way eastbound into the center city area from the blue route. that's a 14-minute drive. no overnight construction delaying any of our majors in pennsylvania. this is a live look in haddon heights, route 30 at 295. 295 is clear, the a.c. expressway, garden state parkway and finally if you're headed northbound on the 42 freeway making your way between route 55

and the walt whitman bridge. that's only a five-minute drive. we're following breaking news in philadelphia's kensington neighborhood. a teenager says she was raped by her stepfather. when police got there, they found the girl's mother beaten and covered in blood. doctors at st. christopher's hospital for children areç treating the teen. we have a crew on the way. the special victims unit will bring you more on the case throughout the morning. a home invasion in delaware county leads to a police chase in philadelphia. just before 11:00 last night three men broke into a home in prospect park with several people inside. as people got there, the three were driving away and that's when the chase began. pursuit ended 12 miles away on i-95 at callowhill and the suspects took off on foot. police caught one man. the other two are on loose.

one person in the home was hurt and is being treated at the hospital. a fire roared through an american leith post in philadelphia destroying memories and breaking hearst. a neighbor shared this cell phone video. the fire was intense. several people inside the building for a memorial day event were not hurt physically but emotionally, the fire took its toll on neighbors who held family get-togethers at the post. >> things can't be replaced. >> very heart breaking. >> we were supposed to be here this afternoon. >> one firefighter had a minor wrist injury. investigators are looking for the cause of that fire. a 4-year-old girl is recovering after a dog bit her

in the face yesterday. the officers shot and killed the animal after it charged at them. the girl is in stable condition. no word if the dog's owner will face charges. 4:06. today a suspect in the deadly assault on a wilmington high school student is scheduled for a hearing in juvenile court. amy joyner-francis die after three girls attacked her in a bathroom at the howard high school of technology last month. the teen suspect involved in today's hearing is charged with negligent homicide. prosecutors will ask the judge that her case be sent to adult core. the two other suspects face conspiracy charges. they're scheduled for trial in juvenile court on june 15th. today testimony resumes in congressman's chaka fattah's federal corruption trial in philadelphia. he's accused of abusing his power by using federal grants to pay off campaign debt. bob casey testified that he did not act on a letter from fattah that endorsed co-defendants

herbert vederman for an ambassadorship. fattah maintains his innocence. we have new information about pennsylvania's so-called porn-gate scandal. the top aide to attorney general kathleen kane has canceled a news conference scheduled for today that's within a report by a special prosecutor investigating offensive and sometimes pornographic e-mails shared by judges, prosecutors and others was supposed to be released. bruce castor says the report is not complete and will be released this summer instead. kane pleaded not guilty to leaking information from a grand jury to a newspaper reporter. her trial begins in august. she's not running for re-election. her term ends in january. all this week, nbc 10 is taking you on a tour of the jersey shore and the fun continues today in sea isle city. the rain from yesterday can't

dampen plans the city has for the summer, familyç fun night, dance parties and concerts are scheduled. some cover bands and entertainment there is free. those who live and work in sea isle year-round tells us they knl wait. >> our skimmer weekend is june 18th. that's a festival up here on the promena promenades. we have several hundred vendors selling their wares here on the promenade. >> we'll have a live report from sea isle city coming up in our next half hour. delaware's national guard headquarters now has a new name. the delaware national guard named their headquarters in new castle in honor of former state attorney general beau biden.

beau served in the national guard. vice president biden talked about beau and the family's struggle. >> the support, all you have given us the last two years, and i say two years, because we knew we were in deep trouble two years ago, has meant more than you will ever know. >> biden says the family is now channeling its energy into causes that beau would support if he were still alive. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 72 degrees here at nbc 10. cooler at the shore. as things cool down, we're seeing fog form. this is a foggy view from cape may. you can see cars moving. can't see beach avenue other than that. the fog thickening. you can see the heavy downpours way offshore. clouds are lingering in delaware and south jersey. it's clearing out for allentown

and some of the suburbs. these clouds will linger into the morning hours. there may be a sprinkle or two. you con see a few rain drops coming around into central delaware this morning. there's a possibility of a brief shower in south jersey before these clouds clear out. but they'll be clearing out. we won't see the steady rainfall we saw yesterday. 60s and low 70s for most of the area. the temperatures in the 60s pretty much all day at the shore yesterday have cooled to 64 in ocean city. atlantic city 65 degrees and 63 degrees cape may point. it will be a warmer afternoon into the 70s. yes, you will see sunshine at the shore. these numbers will be climbing and there is just a slight chance of a shower as we go into the late morning and afternoon hours. at 9:00, it will be pretty quiet. a few lingering clouds. we'll be seeing plenty of sunshine and a quick warmup for allentown and philadelphia. you can see a few sprinkles. as we go into the afternoon, there's a chance of a pop-up

shower. by 5:00, those showers are moving out and clearing out completely by 7:00 this evening. warmer today may have noticed the big warmup with the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. it's not going to be as warm for the rest of the week but we will extend the dry period beyond today. the ten-day outlook when i'm back in ten minutes. tracy? >> we look forward to that. bill was mentioning the fog in the area. let's see how that's impacting drivers. let's start on the garden state parkway. first alert traffic reporter katy zachry has that. how does it look, tracy? >> disregard this head line. this is the garden state parkway, the great egg toll plaza in summer's point. you can see dew there and fog as bill çoutlined in the cape may county area. this is what drivers are dealing with. maybe you stayed at the shore until early this morning. you do have some fog if you're driving back this morning.

a live look outside center city philadelphia, 76 at the vine street expressway, this is the vine right here. traffic this way headed eastbound, left side of your screen headed westbound, no delays, the vine is open. no construction. it will take you about three minutes to go the span of the vine between 95 and 76 in both directions. looking good if the vine is part of your morning commute. finally for delaware drivers in and around the wilmington area, if you're headed northbound on 95 between 295 and 495, that drive will only take you about 11 minutes, roughly the same in the opposite direction. tracy? >> all right, katy, thanks. shining a spotlight on the tens of millions of people suffering from hearing loss. next, we tell you about an initiative called a day without sound. all you need to get involved is a pair of ear plugs. also -- ♪ >> honored at last. next, why memorial day was especially meaningful for two

morning noon or night there's always a moment to discover visit annapolis and create your moment 4:14. good morning, sea isle. the beach. there is some fog along the shore. meteorologist bill henley has been talking about that. 66 degrees here right now. 48 million adults and children suffer from hearing loss. today there's a nationwide challenge called one day without sound. to show people what it's really like to live with hearing loss. people who take the challenge will wear ear plugs that simulate a hearing impairment.

>> it's going to reduce your hearing left by 25 to 30 decibels. you'll experience what someone with a hearing challenge is going through. >> he also says there are two things to remember about hearing loss. first it's progressive and second it's preventible. experts suggest wearing ear plugs when you're in loud areas. if you use ear buds don't turn the volume up too loud for long periods of time of. a 67-year-old man drown after jumping into the pennypack creek trying to save the man's dog. when he went in after him, he was swept away by the current. witnesses say they found the man's body while they were fishing. the dog was found alive near the man's r. meantime, sunday a 60-year-old woman's body was found in pennypack park. her death is not suspicious but it's not clear how she died or how she ended up in the park. nearly 40,000 striking verizon employees will return to work tomorrow.

they reached a contract agreement that includes 1,300 new call center jobs, nearly 11% in raises over four years and the first contract for verizon wireless store workers. union members will vote on the deal after returning to work. land line and cable employees in several states, including pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware went on strike in mid-april. we have new information on the u.s. effort to extradite el chapo, mexico 'leading drug lord. two mexican courts approved the extradition request. he's wanted on drugs and weapons charges. el chapo's lawyers have until july 1st to file an appeal. scary moments for passengers on a united airlines flight leaving tampa. the plane blew a tire on takeoff, sparking a fire monday afternoon. this video from inside the plane taken by a passenger shows

firefighters at work. .flight was on its way to houston when the pilot had to slam on the brakes just before liftoff. no one was hurt and passengers were put on new flights. today president obama will visit the federal emergency management agency for an update on the 2016 atlantic hurricane outlook. hurricane season begins tomorrow. experts predict it will be a near normal season with somewhere between 10 and 16 named storms. president obama will learn about upgrades and new tools that will contribute to more precise hurricane tracking. funding for fema will also be a central issue. and take a look at this video of a tornado forming along the colorado/nebraska border. the cell phone video captures one of the funnels touching down near a wind farm about 150 miles from denver. a barn was destroyed but no one was hurt. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> the rain has finally ended.

now we're seeing the clouds breaking in. we're watching for fog. it hasn'tç formed in delaware. not everybody is going to see it. you may very well remain fog free. interior new jersey, some fog is being reported. vineland, you'll find some in millville, too. mostly cloudy skies for delaware and philadelphia. the temperatures areal coming down in spite of those clouds. 69 now for odessa. 71 in wilmington. and for rehoboth, the delaware beaches, such a steady rain yesterday. that rain is now out of the picture. you'll see sunshine. in fact, we're in for a lot of sunshine today and a quick warmup, too will blow past the 70s this morning. 80 degrees by 11:00 and into the middle 80s by 3:00 this afternoon. for the suburbs, partly sunny skies, 67 at 7:00. by 3:00 this afternoon, well into the 80s. the lehigh valley will be in the low 80s by late this morning into the middle to upper 80s this afternoon. delaware, clouds are lingering

this morning. the showers have ended. there is sunshine that will be breaking through later this morning. really warming things up into the middle to upper 80s this afternoon. for new jersey, starting off with some areas of fog but as the temperature climbs, any fog will literally disappear. 67 degrees at 7:00. by 11:00, 80 degrees. the jersey shore was stuck in all that rain yesterday. still, a slight chance of a shower first thing this morning might see a few sprinkles and clouds will start to thin out as we go into the afternoon. the 60s are gone, 76 degrees at the jersey shore today. a few scattered clouds for philadelphia into bensalem and cherry hill seeing that. the rain is now offshore. those clouds lingering. we have seen a few scattered showers at the shore in atlantic city in just the last hour. but they are very light and more in the line of sprinkles. we'll be drying out for the next few days, the next round of showers is way to the west. don't have to worry about that

until the end of the week. that is on the ten-day forecast. for today, we'll clear out. sunshine, 88 degrees this afternoon. tomorrow, 80 degrees. not quite as hot for tomorrow and for thursday. 76 degrees, the high temperature. come friday, the chance of showers comes back into the area later on friday and into saturday with temperatures warming up saturday to near 80 degrees and then into the low 80s for sunday and monday. clouds and a chance of some showers on sunday and again on monday. then we're drying out for tuesday, wednesday and thursday with temperatures right near normal for this time of year. tracy? >> bill, thanks. bill said fog in the area, not everywhere but still in the area and katy zachry is watching the fog down the shore. katy? >> upper township specifically along the garden state parkway. we have a crew that you'll hear from who's down in sea isle. they've told me along the garden state parkway there are serious patches of fog. this is a live look at the cape

may toll plaza in upper township along the garden state parkway. very few cars on the road. if you're out there, know you'll deal with patchy fog this morning as bill pointed out as well. moving up into the pennsylvania area, this is 476 at germantown pike. if you're headed to or from the poconos, a smooth ride ahead. no issues to report on the northeast extension of the pennsylvania turnpike. finally in montgomery county, there is a road obstruction at manor road and ridge pike for you to be aware of. 4:21 right now. two local families have special memories for memorial day. after waiting for decades, they can see the name of their loved ones on the philadelphia veterans memorial. ♪ç the names of master sergeant frances corcoran and master sergeant george wilson were unveiled. both men die of illnesses while serving in vietnam. their names bring the total on the memorial to 648.
